Recreation FAQs

For Player Families

What age group is my child eligible to participate in?

Since Fall 2026, players are placed by their Date of Birth within the 12 month period of August 1–July 31 according to the updated USSF Player Development Framework guidelines. See the age group table HERE.

What equipment will I receive? How will I get it?

  • U3–U5 players will receive 1 green jersey either from a staff coach (U3 & U4) OR from one of the team's volunteer coaches (U5).

  • All U6–U10 players new to the Spring Recreation Season will receive two jerseys (1 Green HOME jersey, 1 White AWAY jersey). Fall players will keep both jerseys for the following Spring season if they register by the deadline, or purchase a replacement jersey for $10.

  • Returning U11-U19 players who register before March 1st and need a replacement jersey can purchase a replacement jersey from PJ's.

  • New U11–U19 players will receive an assigned number and information to purchase jerseys online via a PJ's Soccer website link.

  • Returning U12-U19 players who participated in the previous season will keep their jerseys and jersey number for the following  season if they register by the deadline given.

  • Returning U11-U19 Players who did not register before the deadline will be assigned a new number and need to purchase a new set of jerseys.

Who will be the coach of my player's team?

All recreation team coaches are volunteers. Consider helping a team as a volunteer coach or assistant coach by registering here. Visit the Volunteer Coach Resources page to find out more about training and benefits for MYS volunteer coaches.

How can my player return to the same team they were on during the previous season?

During the registration process, a request can be made for a player to automatically return to their Fall 2026 team. Players should register as early as possible to increase their chance of returning to a previous team. Note: due to the new age group alignment, some teams may be restructured for Spring 2027.

Returning players from the Fall 2026 season in the U10-U19 age group will have the option to continue playing in the Spring 2027 season with their team if they register before March 1st.

When do I receive schedule information for practice and games?

MYS works with each team's volunteer coach preferences and available FCPA permitted fields to assign the team's practice slots. If a team does not have an assigned coach, consider volunteering as a head or assistant coach.

Is there any extra training for my player(s) during the season?

Visit the Recreation Training page for more information about additional training opportunities such as camps, skills development sessions, and summer programs offered throughout the year.

What is the commitment level needed for my player?

NCSL Rec teams (ages U11–U19) require a greater commitment from players, families, and coaches. Players are encouraged to attend all practices and games. If a player cannot attend a practice or game, it should be indicated in PlayMetrics 'attendance' or a message should be sent to the team coach.

Is there a refund policy if my player cannot participate?

MYS has a nonrefundable fee policy that each family agree to during the registration process. There may be an exception made for a season-ending injury or a move outside the area. For details, click on the applicable policy listed below:

Requirements and Eligibility for Volunteer Coaches

Volunteer coaches should have an enthusiasm for the sport, a commitment to their team, and have completed the required safety compliance items. Coaches for the U6–U8 4v4 modules are not required to have any prior playing or coaching experience. While not required, playing or coaching experience will help with the 7v7 (U9–U10), 9v9 (U11–U12), and 11v11 (U13–U19) game modules. USSF Grassroots Coach License opportunities are hosted throughout the season by the club for all volunteer recreation coaches to participate and gain knowledge & skills to improve in their roles.

Time Commitment Expectation

Coaches will have one practice and one game a week per season. In addition, there is a season kickoff meeting (approximately 90 minutes) for coaches AND some training compliance requirements (2–4 hours). Coaches will also need to communicate weekly with their team (15 minutes).

If a coach cannot attend a practice or game, they can communicate to their players' families that an assistant coach is needed to help those weeks.

Required Coaching Compliance

Volunteer coaches are required by the club and state association VYSA to complete a background check (every 2 years) and the SafeSport Training (90-minute certification course with yearly approximately 20–30 minute refresher course). Coaches will not be given access to their practice schedule or team until they have completed the above items.

Equipment Provided to Coaches

New coaches receive:

  • Ball

  • Coaching Shirt

  • Cones (12)

  • Pinnies (50% of the # of players on the roster)

  • First Aid Kit

Returning coaches receive:

  • Ball

  • Coaching Shirt

Coaching Curriculum for Volunteer Coaches

Coaches will receive a planned session for every practice available on the PlayMetrics team management tool. The age-appropriate sessions are according to the USSF Play-Practice-Play methodology to enhance player experience and create an accessible routine for volunteer coaches to implement each week.

Resources Available

Coaches will be added in PlayMetrics as coaching staff and will have access to the team management app so they can effectively communicate with all parents/players on the team, without having to share private contact information. The PlayMetrics app will include the team schedule (input by the club) including practices and games.

Benefits for Volunteer Coaches

MYS offers a special Credit Program in appreciation for our dedicated Recreation volunteer coaches to show how much their commitment means to the club.

If a coach completes the registration as a volunteer coach in PlayMetrics prior to the start of the season and completes the club and state association coaching requirements (Safe Sport Training & Background Check) before the start of the season they will receive the following:

  • Head Coach - 50% CREDIT

  • Assistant Coach - 25% CREDIT

How it Works:

  • Coaches register their player/s and pay in full for the fall or spring season.

  • Coaches will receive credit(s) per coaching role for each team they volunteer as a coach.

  • The credited amount will be available at the completion of the season and posted to their PlayMetrics account if the above criteria are met.

  • Credit can then be used for one of the next two seasons of the Recreation League Program registrations (i.e. - fall or spring).
