2013 NCAA Division 1 College Cup Features Record Number of Former McLean Youth Soccer Players

In a landmark achievement for the club, former McLean Youth Soccer (MYS) players are on the rosters of all four Final Four teams in the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship.  When Florida State, Virginia Tech, Virginia and UCLA meet this weekend in Cary, NC, to determine a new National Champion, 12  players who once played for MYS and trained under MYS Technical Director, Clyde Watson, will be participating.

Although MYS has placed more than 80 players in women’s college soccer programs across the country at more than 40 Division I schools since 2008 alone, this year marks a new high point in program history.

In Blacksburg, VA, over the holiday weekend, Virginia Tech blasted past Duke 3-0 after junior Katie Yensen headed in a goal thirteen seconds before halftime.  The VT team put away two second-half goals to finish the contest. Yensen, along with her teammate and sophomore Delia Maresco, played club soccer for Watson on the McLean MPS Strikers team, USYS National Finalists title in 2010.   Fellow Hokie and junior defender Danielle King played for McLean Azul. This marks the first time that Virginia Tech has ever advanced to the College Cup. (Incidentally, the Duke squad also featured another former Strikers player that day, sophomore Kara Wilson.)

The Virginia women's soccer team will make its first trip to the NCAA Cup in 22 years after a 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Michigan last Friday. Senior defender and All-ACC third team selection Molly Menchel provided the winner by tapping the ball over the line off a rebound from the post for her sixth goal of the season. Menchel played on Watson’s McLean Freedom team that won the 2007 US Youth Soccer National Championship.

First-year goalkeeper and ACC All-Freshman honoree Morgan Stearns made one save in goal for Virginia during the quarterfinal, posting her school-record 19th victory of the season. Stearns also played in goal for Watson on the McLean Power team that won the ECNL U17 National B-Flight Championship in 2012. The Virginia squad also features five other McLean/Watson alums: sophomore Jessie Ferrari (McLean Strikers), junior Churchill O'Connell (McLean Dragons), freshman Morgan Reuther (McLean Power), freshman Nicole Johnson (McLean Power) and freshman Tori Hanway (McLean Power).

Knocking out the powerhouse and defending champion North Carolina 1-0 in double overtime Saturday on a golden goal was No. 2 seed UCLA. And though it is far from the Northern VA suburbs where Watson trains his players, Los Angeles has suited former McLean Freedom player, UCLA co-captain and senior midfielder Jenna Richmond well. Richmond has been a perennial standout for the Bruins, recently winning her third career All-Pac-12 selection from the conference.

Finally, No. 1 Florida State rolled past ACC foes Boston College 4-0 on Friday. On Florida State’s roster is freshman Marlo Sweatman, a high school standout and Jamaican National Team player, who played for Watson on the McLean Power.

Below is a complete list of former McLean Players on the 2013 Final Four Squads.

As of Nov. 30, college coaches from 18 Division I schools have extended verbal commitments to more than 23 players from McLean's current crop of U17 and U18 players, including Stanford, Pittsburgh, Kentucky, Tennessee, Villanova and William & Mary.

Background on Clyde Watson

With more than 28 years of professional coaching experience, Clyde Watson is a familiar figure in D.C. area soccer. A prominent member of the Guyana Men's National Team for more than 10 years, Watson graduated from Clemson University, where he was All-ACC all four years. He was a First Team All Star with the New York Eagles of the American Soccer League in 1979, and went on to play for professional teams in Pennsylvania and Detroit.

After transitioning from player to coach, Watson served as assistant coach of the Washington Warthogs, Coach of the University of the District of Columbia, and as assistant coach of the WPS’s Washington Freedom from 2001-2010. Clyde currently serves as both Technical Director and Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) Director for McLean Youth Soccer. In addition, he is one of six members of the ECNL Standards Committee, which is developing minimum standards regarding training frequency, coach licensing, facilities and administration/structure for member clubs and coaches within the ECNL.

Clyde was named NSCAA 2007 Youth Girls National Coach of the Year, USYS 2011 Region I Girls Competitive Coach of the Year, and VYSA 2011 Virginia Girls Competitive Coach of the Year. He was also named 1998 Boys Youth Virginia Coach of the Year. He has coached teams to 13 USYS Virginia State Cups, three USYS Region I Championship titles, a USYS National Finalist title (2010, McLean MPS Strikers), and the coveted USYS National Championship title (2007, McLean MPS Freedom). Clyde holds a USSF "B" and  UEFA "A" licenses.  He served as an Assistant Coach to the Washington Freedom in the WUSA 2001-3 and  WPS 2009-10.

McCracken has played for McLean’s Force ECNL '96 team since its inception in July of 2011. In the first seven games of the 2012-13 campaign, she has racked up two goals and one assist. The U16 team sits in second place in the Mid-Atlantic Conference as of Nov. 30, 2012.

U16 ECNL Head Coach Nadir Moumen coached the Force '96 State Cup team to victory, with MYS Technical Director and ECNL Director Clyde Watson assisting.

Teams at the event compete on behalf of one of the four USYS regions: Region I (East), Region II (Midwest), Region III (South) and Region IV (West).

From its inception in July of 2011 through September 2012, the McLean U16 ECNL team has achieved a 41% shutout rate in combined ECNL and tournament competition with Jensen in goal – she also serves as Co-Captain of the squad. Amber Stearns Called Up to U18 U.S. Women’s National Team Training Camp

CHICAGO, IL (October 5, 2012) - U.S. Soccer Women’s Technical Director April Heinrichs has called up 24 players, including McLean ECNL player Amber Stearns (2015), for the third and final Women’s National Team (WNT) training camp of 2013, Oct. 21-28, at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

All players attending the camp were born in 1996 as this camp represents the first event for the next cycle of the U18s (the previous two U18 training camps this year consisted mostly of players born in 1994). Due to age cut-offs, the current group of U18s is focused on the 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. The U.S. U18s will face the San Diego SeaLions of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) on Saturday, October 27, at 4 p.m. PDT.

Stearns helped propel her current U16 ECNL team (aka the “Force”) to a 7th place finish in the U15 Challenge B flight for the 2011-12 season, securing the team a spot in the Top 8 Play-Off group at the National Finals in Waukegan, IL, last June. A veteran of U.S. WNT camps since 2010, Stearns was named to the Chula Vista roster as a defender.

Stearns, who will graduate from Johnson High School in San Antonio, TX, in 2015, was invited to play in the 2012 Puma Elite Prospect Showcase last July, along with two of her Force U16 Teammates, midfielder Madeline McCracken and goalkeeper Katelyn Jensen. She is a nationally ranked forward (#2) by Top Drawer Soccer, as well.

Amber Stearns (2015), 5'10", plays in a variety of positions for McLean's Force ECNL '96 team, including as Forward, where she racked up five goals and two assists during the 2011-12 campaign. The Force finished with a +26 goal differential in ECNL play.

Coached by MYS Technical Director and MYS ECNL Director Clyde Watson, the Power qualified for the National Finals B Flight “Top 8” Group in Chicago after a season that started in September 2011 and ended this past May. After finishing at the top of their 36-team Flight with only one loss all season, the Power were seeded first for the national title play-offs.

The Power started the tournament against the U17 Charlotte Soccer Academy team (North Carolina) that went up early in the match by two goals. After that wake-up call, Morgan ReutherNicole Johnson (both committed to play for UVA starting in 2013) and Cali Hutson put goals into the back of the net to overcome the deficit in the second half. That win propelled the team to a semi-final match up against the U17 Washington Premier FC squad (Washington state).

In the Washington match, the Power showcased their defensive strengths. Anticipating very competitive matches, the McLean ECNL staff called up U16 McLean defensive standout Natalia Barrow to play with the Power due to injuries on its usual roster. Barrow, teaming with Evelyn Robinson (committed to play for South Carolina in 2013) at center back, was outstanding. Dana Daniels tended goal for most of regulation, holding the Washington team scoreless. Late in the match Watson substituted keepers, inserting UVA-bound Morgan Stearns into the match to close it out. Despite the prolific scoring of day one, the Power could not generate a goal in regulation or during two overtime periods. The match went to penalty kicks. Stearns was undeniably brilliant in the penalty kick session, stopping two of Washington’s four shots. Meanwhile, Robinson, midfielder Regan Houston (committed to play for William & Mary this coming Fall), Johnson and Hutson converted their penalty kicks, advancing the Power to the finals.

The victory against Washington Premier set up a championship finals match against Minnesota Thunder Academy’s U17 team, who the Power had recently played to a 2-2 draw over Memorial Day weekend in New Jersey. Luckily, coach Watson still had a few tricks up his sleeve. James Madison commit Allie Bunner came into the match mid-way thought the first half and finished a ball into the net to put the Power up one to nothing. Bunner, who had done the same against Minnesota a month before, could play only briefly due to a swelling ankle, but she made the most of her time. Bunner’s cushion was short-lived. At the end of the first half, Minnesota was awarded a free kick, equalizing the score at 1-1.

Was it to be deja vu all over again? Not quite. In the second half, the Power were relentless. The Power’s defense was solid and the mid-field controlled the ball. Johnson twice served balls to Reuther, who had hounded the Minnesota defense throughout the match, and she finished them into the back of the net, clinching a 3-1 victory for the Power and the B flight national championship title. At the very end of regulation play, an unsuspecting Watson received a well-earned Gatorade bath to cool him off in the mid-90 degree heat.

In addition to the players mentioned above, the Power’s roster included Ariana Alston, Carson Cyphers (committed to VCU), Jen Grundy (committed to Rice), Tori Hanway, Emily Hester, Maryfay Jackson, Jess Ku, Lindsey Sawczuk, and Marlo Sweatman (committed to Florida State), Nisrene Tabbara, and Alexandra Wong (committed to VCU). Only Regan Houston will be graduating in 2012, so the remainder of the team will remain intact to try for another national title for McLean in their senior year.

Depending on the outcome of the initial rounds, teams in the B National Finals will advance to Semi-Finals and Finals, or will compete in consolation games. Starting in the 2012-2013 season, the ECNL will abandon the A and B Flight structure and replace it with a regional conference-based approach to National Championship qualification.

Congratulations to the ECNL teams and their coaches on this achievement!
