Field Development

McLean Youth Soccer has invested approximately $4,000,000 for the construction of five (5) synthetic turf fields in McLean with an additional $300,000 funding obtained from Fairfax County from grants. On October 1, 2011, Field #5 at the Springhill Recreation Center was opened to the community. This field is one of the premier synthetic turf field in Fairfax County and was constructed with an investment from MYS of $911,000. The playing surface measures 120 yd x 75 yd and can accommodate 2 games played sideways simultaneously for younger age groups.

However McLean youth sports has also permanently lost six athletic fields recently due to expansion of other County facilities , and a seventh field (Police Field) will be unavailable soon for two years during the $20.1 million expansion and renovation of the Dranesville Supervisors office.

Because of the loss of fields,  MYS currently has over 100 players practicing in Herndon from 9-10:30 pm every Monday night. The loss of the Police Field will mean that over an additional 180 players will be displaced starting in the Spring of 2011.

MYS representatives have met numerous times with  County officials seeking assistance in developing new fields and improving existing fields. However, the rate of improvement is falling behind the overall demand. We need your help to ensure that any child that wants to play organized sports within McLean can be allowed to register.

Here are some options that are possible solutions:

Salona Park

In 2005 the Fairfax County Park Authority (“FCPA”) paid $16 million under a written agreement with a family to acquire a portion of their property with the expressed written intent to construct two grass unlit rectangular athletic fields on the property.

In November 2010 FCPA formally presented the Master Plan to the community and a small group of local citizens that opposed the fields. In March 2011 Supervisor Foust created the Salona Park Task Force, (consisting of members of the community who were opposed to fields, as well as representatives from the family who had received the $16 million), to determine alternative uses for the property. MYS is actively campaigning with the other McLean youth sports to have the two grass fields built that were in the Master Plan at the time of the land purchase. The youth sports are seeking signatures on petitions to demonstrate the need and desire to have the fields built as planned, and they are committed to making sure that the needs of the youth are heard.

Consider supporting the petition to support fields at Salona Park.

McLean High School (“MHS”) and Lewinsville Park

In 2010 McLean Youth Soccer formed a partnership with McLean Football, McLean Youth Lacrosse and MHS Athletic Boosters Club. Two separate proposals were developed to address school and youth practice needs by installing synthetic turf on the MHS stadium field and the two existing lit fields at Lewinsville Park. The partnership proposed to fund 100% of the $2.5M project cost however, a small group of local citizens oppose the proposal. In spite of support from Fairfax County school administration and the FCPA for the proposal, it does not have the support of the current Supervisor, and will not be moving forward.

Langley Forks Park

There is an opportunity to construct up to four artificial turf fields with lights once the land swap between the Federal Park and Recreation and Fairfax County has been completed.

We ask for your support on these projects to ensure our children will have a place to play in the future.

The MYS Board is  committed to ensuring that every child will have a place to play and that no child will be turned away as a result of the lack of field space. Available field space is the most significant issue facing our club and we are expending a significant amount of time and energy to make it happen.  Your support is key in achieving the goal of sufficient field space for MYS sports.
