Subject to the availability of funds, MYS shall offer financial aid for MYS registration fees to those members that demonstrate a need or financial hardship. The decision to make any award, the amount thereof, and the beneficiaries shall be made on a defined set of decision factors which are consistently applied under the circumstances. Notwithstanding the forgoing, all award decisions are made at the sole discretion of the MYS Financial Aid Committee and the Chairman of the MYS Board. The application information will be kept confidential within the MYS Financial Aid Committee.
Applications – Completed applications (with supporting documentation) for financial aid may be mailed to MYS Financial Aid, PO Box 724, McLean, VA 22101 or faxed to MYS at 703/556-6467. Applications may also be emailed to treasurer@mcleansoccer.org for Recreational players (U-5, TOPS, house, and SFL) or financialaid@mcleansoccer.org for Travel players (Academy, MPS, and Travel). Incomplete applications may result in disqualification for aid.
Award decisions for Recreational players (U-5, TOPS, house, and SFL) will be made on a rolling basis as the applications are received with the deadline for submission two weeks before the start of the season. Award decisions for Travel players (Academy, MPS, and Travel) will be made as follow:
Applications deadline Decision made by Season
July 2nd July 10th Annual or fall
August 22nd August 31st Annual or fall
January 8th January 15th spring
March 8th March 19th spring
Applications received by the July or August deadline may request consideration for an award for both the fall and spring seasons or the fall season only. Applications received by the early deadline each season (July and January) may receive preferential consideration based on the availability of aid funds.
Eligibility – Any MYS member is eligible to apply for financial aid. Qualification is primarily based on verified family income. In 2009/2010, the eligibility threshold is aggregate parental Adjusted Gross Income (line 37 on Federal tax return Form 1040) not exceeding $70,000. Other factors such as unemployment or other financial hardships may be considered by the Financial Aid Committee.
Amount of Aid Award – The Board or Treasurer of MYS shall determine the amount of the financial aid available for a season; however, there is no obligation to award all/any of the award pool. Based on the amount of the award pool and the amount of requests for financial aid, awards will be made on a sliding scale based on verified family income. The maximum amount of an award to an individual shall not exceed 100% of the MYS registration fee paid for a House, TOPS, or U-5 player ($205.50 max/season), a Travel player ($400.00 max/season), a MPS ($500 max/season), or an Academy player ($1,000.00 max/year).
Families of Travel/MPS/Academy applicants receiving the maximum aid award for their income level may be required to provide up to 10 hours volunteer service to MYS each season. Those applicants that do not fulfill this requirement for a season may be ineligible for future aid awards.
Application Process - Applications for financial aid are available online and must be completed and returned to MYS by the above indicated deadlines. A signed copy of the most recent Federal tax return on Form 1040 (or applicable form) for both parents of the applicant (supporting schedules and attachments are not required unless requested) must be filed with the financial aid application. Applicants must register the player in the MYS registration system each season on a timely basis. All MYS registration fees must be paid in full (by aid award or otherwise) on a timely basis for the player to be eligible to play for or train with their MYS team. Annual awards will be credited in equal amounts at the beginning of each season subject to applicant’s re-registration and confirmation of continuing need in the spring season.
Applications will be evaluated by the Financial Aid Committee. The Committee shall present the proposed aid awards to the Chairman of the MYS Board for approval. Notification of aid awards shall be sent via email to each applicant and the MYS Administrator.
Other Opportunities – MYS has a limited number of compensated positions (e.g., referees, field set up, camp assistants, Age Group Coordinators, etc.) and volunteer positions (e.g., Rec coaches, TSL’s, tournament volunteers, etc.) which offer individuals an opportunity to cover registration costs or to give back to MYS. Please contact the MYS Administrator for more information on these positions.
Questions – Questions about financial aid awards for Recreation players may be directed to the MYS Treasurer at treasurer@mcleansoccer.org. Questions about financial aid awards for Travel/MPS/Academy players may be directed to the MYS Travel Aid Coordinator at financialaid@mcleansoccer.org.
