U17 VIRGINIA STATE CUP CHAMPS 2014
97 Girls Green won the U17 Virginia State Cup Championship on Nov. 2, 1-0 over VSA Heat. It was the 85th minute that Susie Kim headered the winning goal on a corner kick from Amy Triplett. The team defended well in the last 5 minutes despite the extreme windy weather conditions.
On the road to State Cup victory, the McLean side defeated FCR Mystx ‘97 3-2, the #2 seeded VBTS Beach FC 97G Red 2-1 and the VYS Strikers Red with a shutout of 3-0. VSA upset the #1 seed PWSI Courage Red in the other semi-final State Cup round.
“I am extremely proud of these girls and this accomplishment in particular. They have pushed themselves this past year to compete at a high level every time they step on the field,” said McLean Head Coach Cindi Harkes, who has coached the 97 team since the U16 level. "I couldn’t be happier for this group of girls!"
This was the first appearance for McLean 97 in the Final Four of the VA State Cup competition. State Cup winners from all 15 Region I state associations (as well as champions of the Region I Premier League) are eligible to compete in the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships, to be held in Barboursville, WV, June 25 through 30, 2015. Region I champions in each age group from that event advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Tulsa, OK, on July 19-26, 2015.
McLean Youth Soccer's girls program has a long and successful history of winning Virginia State Cups: Since 2007 alone, the Club has won 11 titles (including Sunday's two victories) in the U16-U19 age level competitions. In that same time span, more than 130 MYS female players have committed to a total of 70 DI and DIII universities and colleges in 22 athletic conference across 24 states. There was at least one former MYS player on the rosters of all four teams (UCLA, UVA, FSU & VT) in the Final Four of the NCAA Championship (“College Cup”) in 2013.
