While everyone was watching the World Cup, MYS Coach Gary Evans visited the South Pacific for a once-in-a-lifetime sailing adventure.
During his trip, Coach Evans delivered MYS shirts donated by the club, and a soccer ball to Nabasovi Primary School on the small island of Koro. He was then asked to run a kick around and was invited back to hold a full practice session with the older players on sports day a couple of days later.
Ranked at 188th out of 209 teams in the FIFA world soccer rankings, Fiji is more renowned for rugby than it is for soccer. Coach Evans said that despite wanting to pick up the ball and run with it, the barefooted players showed great athleticism and bravery, especially when heading long balls.
The boys performed the "Haka" war dance to say thank you afterwards. Coach Evans described the experience as one of the highlights of his trip.
One of the teachers at the school will now take over coaching the players and maybe someday start a league program on the island. We hope to stay in touch with them.
Coach Evans will coach the U14B McLean Hotspur Gold team next season.
