As part of a targeted effort to provide a positive environment for its youth athletes, McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Youth Soccer are sponsoring a workshop to help parents and coaches enrich youth sports for children.   The first part of the workshop will be provided by Positive Coaching Alliance, a Stanford University-based non-profit organization developed to teach parents, coaches and organizational leaders how to effectively work with young athletes while instilling the values of teamwork, discipline, respect and goal-setting.  The second part of the workshop will be provided by the SCORE Concussion Program at Children’s National Medical Center.  Dr. McGill will be providing an active training about concussion recognition and response, emphasizing the tools available to help parents and coaches manage this injury effectively.

This combination PCA and SCORE workshop is being held for the first time.  We are proud and honored to bring this to the McLean youth sport community.

The Positive Coaching Alliance session teaches parents how to help their kids get the most out of their sports experience. It addresses how parents can help coaches and league administrators establish and maintain a positive competitive environment. This workshop session also gives parents tips for discussing occurrences in college and professional sports with their kids to bring out life lessons.  “Working with hundreds of youth sports organizations around the United States, we've developed practical tools and guidelines to help youth athletes, their coaches and parents realize that winning is not only reflected in game scores but also in the effort players give, the learning and improvement they achieve, and the ability they develop to bounce back from mistakes,” said Jim Thompson, founder and director of Positive Coaching Alliance.

The Safe Concussion Outcome, Recovery, & Education (SCORE) Concussion Program at Children’s National Medical Center evaluates, monitors and manages the care of children and adolescents with concussions (mild traumatic brain injury or TBI). The program consults with physicians regionally and nationally, as well as scholastic and youth recreational sports programs in which children are vulnerable to injury. To help children playing sports safely, the SCORE Program also offers active training and educational sessions to help make parents, coaches, and medical providers confident in recognizing and responding to concussion.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday October 23, 2013 at 7:30-9:30pm at the McLean High School Lecture Hall.  All parents are invited.  The club is sponsoring the workshop, so admission is free.
