Will Olson has been honored by VYSA as the TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year in 2012. This sixteen year old junior at Landon School in Bethesda has responded to a call to serve a need in his community and continues to selflessly volunteer season after season. Will is a 3 year member of the varsity soccer team, and has taken his love and passion for the game to share his time and talents with the TopSoccer participants. Will has assisted his dad in developing and implementing the curriculum for each session. Through his leadership, he has set a positive tone and experience for all of the participants. In turn, the TOPSoccer program has changed Will’s life by teaching him about adversity and diversity - - life lessons that he can share with others for the rest of his life.
McLean TOPSoccer was established in 2003 with VYSA's assistance. TOPSoccer is a small, but important part of the MYS soccer curriculum and gives meaning to club’s mission. This program is offered in both the spring and the fall seasons. The one hour practice sessions are held on Saturday afternoons for eight or nine weeks. On average, we have approximately 15 TOPSoccer players with special needs participate in the program each season. We have a similar number of able-bodied buddies, mostly middle and high school age boys and girls (many of whom play soccer for recreational, travel, or school teams) who help the players at the weekly practice. A few of the older, more experienced, and reliable buddies are designated as assistant directors and are responsible for conducting the weekly practice. Director Eric Olson has coordinated this program since 2005.
McLean Youth Soccer extends congratulations and thanks to Will Olson on this well-deserved acknowledgement.
