Memorandum
To: McLean Youth Soccer Membership
From: McLean Youth Soccer Vice Chair

I am pleased to present the slate of candidates for two year terms to the MYS Board of Directors that has been approved by the Board's Nominating Committee and by the Board of Directors. The slate will be presented to the MYS membership for a vote at the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, June 4th.

The Nomination Committee and Board recommend Nancy McGuire Choi, Karen Gibian, and Elizabeth Kaplan for election as new Directors for a 2-year term.

Nancy McGuire Choi
Nancy McGuire Choi currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer with Polaris, an award-winning nonprofit that uses data-driven strategies to disrupt and prevent human trafficking. Nancy grew up playing soccer in Massachusetts and from her experience learned early lessons in leadership, what it means to be a good teammate, how to train to win and to learn from losses, and much more. As a parent now, she sees the role soccer is starting to play for her daughters - the joys of learning new skills, gaining confidence in their abilities, and the simple pleasure of being out on the field playing a fun game with their friends. Nancy feels a strong connection to the sport and has a desire to ensure the best possible experience for MYS soccer players. Nancy has been a volunteer recreation coach with MYS for several years, has two daughters who play soccer with MYS, and has experience with MYS Recreation and Juniors programs. Nancy brings the following experience and skills to the Board: Non-profit; Board & Governance; Strategic Planning; Innovative Thinking; Design Thinking; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; and Data Analytics. If elected to serve on the Board, Nancy is interested in helping with data-driven analysis & decision making, communications, Recreation coach support, and increasing volunteer coaches & female role models in the club.
Karen Gibian
Karen Gibian currently serves as the Associate General Counsel of Tax Law at the Investment Company Institute. Karen has been involved with MYS for the past six years, has two daughters who play soccer with MYS, and has experience with MYS Recreation, Juniors, and Travel programs. Karen has contributed to MYS and her local community in many ways through numerous volunteer and leadership efforts, including but not limited to: MYS volunteer recreation coach; travel team treasurer and team admin; multiple MYS Board Committees; Homeowners Association Treasurer; and Trusteeship Committee Member and Girls on the Run Head Coach at The Langley School. Karen brings the following experience and skills to the Board: Volunteerism, Board & Governance; Tax Law; Public Speaking; Objective and Open-Minded; Listening and Problem Solving; Consensus Building; Decision Making; Analytical Skills; Diversity & Inclusion. If elected to serve on the Board, Karen is interested in helping with improving the sense of community among all recreation and travel families, improving fields available for recreation teams, and encouraging and retaining more girls to play the sport of soccer.
Elizabeth Kaplan
Elizabeth Kaplan has been involved with MYS for the past eight years. She feels youth athletics, including soccer, provide benefits to youth, their families and the community at large. Elizabeth and her family have gained fulfilling experiences and relationships from their long term experience with MYS and the MYS Travel and ECNL programs, so she would like to give back to the organization and its members. In addition to volunteering with MYS, Elizabeth has served on the Board of Governors of Kenwood Country Club for the past six years. She has also served as PTA Secretary at their local elementary school, and next year will serve as the Communications Chair of the Parents' Association at St. Albans School. Especially meaningful to Elizabeth, she currently serves as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and has been appointed by the Montgomery County Circuit Court to represent the best interests of a teenager who has been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect. Elizabeth brings the following experience and skills to the Board: Volunteerism, Board & Governance; Retired securities regulation lawyer; Innovative ideas and forward-thinking; Analytical and organizational skills. If elected to serve on the Board, Elizabeth is interested in helping with the challenges of cost barriers for ECNL, training and support for the MYS Recreation program and its volunteer coaches, and establishing mentorship opportunities.

The following Directors are completing their 2-year term and are eligible to serve again. The Nominating Committee and Board recommends these candidates for re-election for a 2-year term: Michael Dalakis and Brian Luwis.

The following Directors are not up for re-election and will continue serving their term on the Board: Bryan Judd, Michael Kunz, Laura Mattis, Susan Mrachek, and Michele Reing.

We thank Whitney Bergendahl, Kirk Robertson, and James Socas for their service on the MYS Board of Directors. Whitney served one 2-year term, and both Kirk and James served two 2-year terms so are not eligible for re-election. We are so thankful for their many years of service and contributions to MYS.

Thank you to all who volunteer and participate in the many and various MYS programs. We welcome all members to attend the upcoming Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, June 4th!

Fundraising Success for Max Cure Foundation

This year, MYS expanded its fundraising efforts to support Childhood Cancer Awareness month in September. The proceeds from the sales of Gold socks and laces will benefit Max Cure - a local group founded by an MYS coach which supports local residents. Many teams purchased their gold socks and laces to wear during practices and games. We are so proud of our teams' efforts in raising $1200!

"On behalf of the Max Cure Foundation, we wish to express our sincere appreciation to McLean Youth Soccer and all the families that participated in raising money this past September in connection with childhood cancer awareness month. As part of our mission, Max Cure utilizes funds to directly support families with a child in active treatment for cancer while experiencing financial difficulties. MYS' support will provide Max Cure the ability to help support more families in the greater Washington, DC Metropolitan area in an effort to ease some of the financial burdens experienced as a result of having a child diagnosed with cancer. Max Cure has now provided in excess of $700,000 to over 150 families." ~ Jonathan Agin, Max Cure Director
